I was in my second year at the University, and I worked part time in the SU pub. When it was the Superbowl in 2012 the pub got permissions to stay open (until about 5/6am) to show it and have a Superbowl party. I ended up working, so was finishing my shift in the early hours of the morning. Around this time the local council had decided that after midnight only the street lights on major roads would be left on to save money (a genius idea really), and whilst I lived over near the other campus the university ran a free shuttle bus so I didn’t usually have to worry about getting home from work after a late finish. However, the shuttle bus stopped at 3:30 once the SU club had closed, so it wasn’t running at the time I finished work after the Superbowl party. One of my male colleagues offered to walk with me to the main road, which was lit, as the road from the pub (and main University campus) and the nearest major road wasn’t. As we were walking down the road we heard footsteps approach from behind but couldn’t really see who it was in the dark, and suddenly a male voice went “oh shit, one of them isn’t a girl” and these two lads then ran past us and ran off into the night. My colleague ended up walking me all the way home even though it was the opposite direction to where he lived. I have no doubt that if I’d been alone, or I’d been with another woman I would have been attacked.
